The short answer

What to do first

Start here: For winter 2026/27, GOV.UK says a person living in England, Wales or Northern Ireland may qualify if they were born on or before 27 June 1960 and meet the residence conditions. The qualifying week is 21 to 27 September 2026. Most eligible people are paid automatically, but some need to claim, including certain people who have moved abroad or whose circumstances mean no automatic payment is due. Read the claim page if no letter arrives; do not assume a household member’s award covers everyone.

Scope of this guide

This guide helps you understand the options and questions to ask. It is not personal medical, legal or financial advice. Check the official sources for your nation and seek qualified help for high-stakes decisions.

Who this guide is for

People checking winter heating support for themselves or a relative, including households unsure which UK nation scheme applies.

Winter Fuel Payment 2026/27 is a payment for eligible people of State Pension age in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, while Scotland has a separate pension-age heating payment. Other support depends on benefits, household circumstances and the nation where you live. These schemes have different purposes: a payment based on age is not the same as help triggered by cold weather or a discount on an electricity bill. Check the winter and qualifying dates before planning around a payment, and keep any letter that explains the amount or repayment arrangements.

What to prepare and ask for

1. Check Winter Fuel Payment eligibility

For winter 2026/27, GOV.UK says a person living in England, Wales or Northern Ireland may qualify if they were born on or before 27 June 1960 and meet the residence conditions. The qualifying week is 21 to 27 September 2026. Most eligible people are paid automatically, but some need to claim, including certain people who have moved abroad or whose circumstances mean no automatic payment is due. Read the claim page if no letter arrives; do not assume a household member’s award covers everyone.

2. Understand the amount and recovery

You'll usually get £200, or £300 if you were born before 28 September 1946. You may get a lower amount (£100 to £200) if you live with someone else who is also eligible and neither of you gets Pension Credit, Universal Credit or income-related ESA. If you live in a care home and do not get one of those benefits, you'll get £100 or £150. If an individual’s total income is over £35,000, HMRC recovers their payment through tax arrangements. Read the letter rather than estimating from a neighbour’s award.

3. Know when it should arrive

Most Winter Fuel Payments are made automatically in November or December 2026. A letter should say how much is due and which account will receive it. GOV.UK says to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre if the money has not arrived by 27 January 2027 or if a letter does not arrive and you think you qualify. People who need to make a claim for winter 2026/27 must do so by 31 March 2027. Keep records of a claim and any change in address or bank details.

4. Check Scotland’s pension-age payment

People living in Scotland do not receive Winter Fuel Payment. The Scottish Government provides Pension Age Winter Heating Payment instead, using its own eligibility and payment arrangements. For 2026/27, mygov.scot lists amounts from £105.55 to £316.70 according to circumstances, and says payments are normally made without an application when records show entitlement. The qualifying week is 21 to 27 September 2026. If a letter does not arrive, use the Scottish service’s instructions; do not claim the England, Wales or Northern Ireland payment instead.

5. Separate cold-weather help from age payments

Cold Weather Payment operates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Eligible benefit recipients may receive £25 when their postcode area meets the qualifying cold-weather test for seven consecutive days during 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027. GOV.UK provides a postcode checker and says payments are normally automatic. Scotland does not use this scheme: its Winter Heating Payment is a different benefit for qualifying low-income households and is not triggered by a cold spell. Check the relevant nation’s eligibility rules if a payment seems missing.

6. Look at the wider household support

Winter Fuel Payment and cold-weather schemes are separate from Warm Home Discount, local crisis help, energy-efficiency grants and advice about arrears. Some support requires a separate application; other schemes depend on the electricity account, benefits or the home. A payment may not arrive in time to prevent a short-term heating problem, so contact the council, housing provider or a trusted advice service early if the home is unsafe or bills are unmanageable. In Northern Ireland, ask the relevant local service about current heating and home-energy assistance.

7. Challenge or query a payment safely

Read the whole decision letter and compare its dates, address, household information and account details with your records. If something is wrong, contact the named government service using the contact route on its official page, not a link in an unexpected text. Ask what evidence is needed and note the date and outcome of the call. If income recovery is mentioned, HMRC explains how the charge works and how to opt out of future payments where allowed. Do not pay a fee to someone promising to release a heating payment.

Evidence and questions

Common questions

Who qualifies for Winter Fuel Payment in 2026/27?

GOV.UK says people living in England, Wales or Northern Ireland may qualify if they were born on or before 27 June 1960 and meet the residence rules for the qualifying week, 21 to 27 September 2026. The payment amount depends on household circumstances and other benefits. People living in Scotland use Pension Age Winter Heating Payment instead. Check the official eligibility rules before assuming a payment is due.

How much is Winter Fuel Payment in 2026/27?

You'll usually get £200, or £300 if you were born before 28 September 1946. You may get a lower amount (£100 to £200) if you live with someone else who is also eligible and neither of you gets Pension Credit, Universal Credit or income-related ESA. If you live in a care home and do not get one of those benefits, you'll get £100 or £150. If individual income is over £35,000, HMRC recovers the payment. The award letter is the best guide to the amount and any repayment.

Does Scotland get Cold Weather Payment?

No. Scotland uses Winter Heating Payment for some people on qualifying low-income benefits. It is not linked to the same seven-day cold spell test used by Cold Weather Payment in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Pension-age support is also separate in Scotland. If you live in Scotland, use mygov.scot to check the current schemes rather than waiting for a GOV.UK cold-weather payment.

What should I do if Winter Fuel Payment has not arrived?

Check the award letter, address and bank account details first. Most payments are due in November or December 2026; GOV.UK says to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre if it has not arrived by 27 January 2027. Some people need to claim, and the claim deadline for winter 2026/27 is 31 March 2027. Use the contact route reached from GOV.UK, not a text link.

Is Cold Weather Payment the same as Winter Fuel Payment?

No. Winter Fuel Payment is based on age and other eligibility rules, while Cold Weather Payment is for eligible benefit recipients when local weather meets the qualifying test. Both operate in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, but Scotland has separate arrangements. Warm Home Discount is another different scheme: it reduces an eligible electricity bill rather than paying cash. Check each scheme separately.

Before you act

Write down the outcome you want, the names and dates involved, and the evidence or documents you already have. Ask for important decisions, costs and next steps in writing. If information is unclear, ask which nation’s rules are being used and when the decision will be reviewed.

If there is a delay or disagreement

Keep a short factual record of calls, letters and missed actions. Ask for the responsible person, the written reasons, the complaints or review route and any deadline. Immediate health or safety risks should be escalated separately rather than waiting for a routine complaint.

Differences across the UK

Winter Fuel Payment and Cold Weather Payment apply in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with eligibility and administration on GOV.UK or nidirect. Scotland has Pension Age Winter Heating Payment instead of Winter Fuel Payment and Winter Heating Payment instead of Cold Weather Payment. The Scottish payments have different rules and are not triggered by the same qualifying cold spell. Energy discounts and local help also differ, so use the scheme for the person’s home nation.
